Going on Account - A Pirate's Life For Me

By: Gus Victoria

He worked long hours
In the master’s house
That for long stood on the hill
Overlooking a kingdom of sorts,
Envy of many,
For the position he carried.
He buttled long and hard
And more than one maid
Did he fraternize;
A little virtue,
A little vice,
Ghosts friendly and nice,
Still he grew restless,
The sea called,
In her deep melody
She called;
A siren’s song.
He answered and left.
That spooky house
On that hill he left,
Not far was the journey,
That found him on the shore
Of the waters
That bore that Wicked Wench,
Her captain wailed as the devil’s own minion,
To go on account;
To join or regret.
The greens of the livery he traded,
For colorful rags
And the pirate’s life.
To pillage and plunder
The lands spotted atop the crow’s nest,
A black flag now announced
The coming of a pirate;
Once servant of an estate,
Now master of the sea.

Spooky House

By: Gus Victoria

Long ago high on a hill
Your foundation was laid,
First among many
You stand proud still,
Home to spirits
Characters and more,
Nestled in history,
Never forgotten,
Nostalgic before your time,
Spooky you are
Keeping true terror at bay,
As your ghosts visit
Wander, laugh and play
You make friends with strangers,
After just a little while,
It never takes long,
Tears you turn to a smile,
You, we do not fear,
In our hearts you are forever near,
A wonderful house
A Spooky House,
On a hill,
In our memories always
Brighter, higher still.

Bat Hat Girl

Happy Bat Hat Day to all the wonderful ladies that have ever been maids at the Haunted Mansion! Click the video below and sing along with these new lyrics!

(Lyrics sung to the style of  Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond.)

Bat Hat Girl
Lucky to know one
Bat Hat Girl
Every body wants one

Maid in green, rarely seen to smile at guests
When you open that door and bid us in
To your master’s house
That spooky house

Bat Hat Girl
Waving and greeting
Bat Hat Girl
Pointing and seating

Yes its true, I love you girl, how can I resist?
Master Gracey knew no one but you could
Happy Bat Hat Day!
Care for his Mansion

[break]

Maid in green, rarely seen to smile at guests
When you open that door and bid us in
To your master’s house

Bat Hat Girl
Waving and greeting
Bat Hat Girl
Pointing and seating

Yes its true, I love you girl, how can I resist?
Master Gracey knew no one but you could
Care for his Mansion

The Perfect Staff - Haunted Mansion Edition

By: Gus Victoria

Working at a theme park can sometimes be monotonous, but many other times it can be crushing with the pressure that comes from dealing with guests that have done away with common sense for the duration of their vacation (assuming, generously I might add, that they had any to begin with). The insane requests add up and sometimes no amount of shouting or pointing can convince a family that the door clearly marked “exit” is not secretly an entrance.  Those are just a couple of the things one must deal with.

In this work environment stress can easily get to you. During one of those stress-filled days recently I wondered what it would be like if the entire attraction was run by gods and heroes of old? I took each position as you encounter it and put a character fitting the role; historically and/or mythologically. So enjoy Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion as run by a godly cast!

Greeters

Cuchulainn - Beowulf

As you approach the entrance of the mansion you see two hulking warriors. Each dressed in the typical butler green you no doubt notice the muscles tearing at the fabric as if two Germanic Incredible Hulks await the question they know is leaping to escape.

“Is this the—“

Before you can finish and say “entrance” Beowulf bellows “Enter foolish mortal!!” Then he and Cuchlainn share a hearty laugh as they take long deep swigs from their tremendous tankards which you assume are filled with something other than water. The sun glints off their tremendous steel weapons giving you a sense of trepidation and unease that will only grow as you continue down the queue. These two are after all the most good-natured of the cast.

Turnstiles

Hecate

Winding your way down the path, around the rose garden and through the garnet-colored canopy you finally come upon a crossroads. To your left is a world of interactive enchantment through a wondrous cemetery and to your right…is not. Hecate stands there waiting not very patiently for you to make your choice. As you struggle with your choice you notice Hecate’s smile waver and fade. Her mood darkens and so does the sky. You feel electricity in the air. A choice begins to form in your head, but you cannot yet decide your course. Storm clouds gather around you and the once sunny Florida day has threatened to let loose a deluge of near-bibical proportions. Yet you continue to delay your choice. In a moment of clarity though you run to your left and the skies clear as you look back to see a grinning Hecate wave warmly at you as she smiles.

Queue

Anubis

After having traveled through the enchanted cemetery playing amongst the tombs of a composer, a sea captain, and a poetess you reach a place where before you is a large wooden door. In front of this closed door stands Anubis. Despite his jackal-head you can understand him perfectly as he humorlessly requests that you fill all the open space in front of. That’s when you notice that indeed there is much space between you and the next person. You look sheepishly at Anubis as you inch closer to the person in front of you and the doors. You can’t tell if it is a smile or a snarl that he casts at you, but whatever it is you feel it burn deep within your soul laying bare all your secrets and insecurities when suddenly the door in front of you flies open!

Stretch

Thor

“YOUR TIME HAS COME! ENTER MORTALS!!”

The command is shouted like thunder and you tremble slightly. You feel fortunate that trembling was your only hesitation because hanging conspicuously from his belt is the biggest war hammer you have ever seen. Even in the darkened foyer room you can see the energy crackling across it and the power emanating from it. A child begins to cry frantically that he is terrified. His concerned parents share a panicked look hoping, in vain, that Thor does not notice.

With a furious glance in their direction the child is silenced; momentarily. Upon the second shriek though Mjolnir rises and Thor brandishes it in front of the bratty child.

“CHILD THIS HOUSE IS NOT TO BE FEARED!! I AM!! INTO THE ROOM! NOW!!!!”

With that the parents faint. With disgust Thor calls to his father’s ravens and they escort the frightened party out. With a glance that would melt the strongest resolve of the most veteran warrior Thor challenges anyone to repeat the display of the weakling child and his parents. No one does and content, Thor enters the Stretch room kindly asking everyone to enter the dead center. No one disobeys.

Load 1

Hercules

Surviving the most terrifying moments of your life to that point you enter a hallway at the end of which is a slowly moving belt. Beside this belt move your ride vehicles; nearly identical black buggies.  On the belt you see two figures, one at each end. The first is nearly as intimidating as Thor. He is the mighty Hercules and though his rippling frame is impressive it is the hint of madness in his eyes that gives you pause. As you approach he tells you in no uncertain terms that there are no more than three to a buggy. As you turn to discuss with your family who will ride with whom you feel an iron grip close around your waist and in a moment you are thrust mightily into the empty waiting buggy. Hercules simply says in a humorless tone, “you ride alone.”

Load 2

Thoth

At the end of that very belt you see an Ibis- headed butler. Like Anubis before you can also understand him perfectly. His nametag says “Thoth.” He stands in front of a colorful monitor that read all sorts of information you can’t decipher from your seat and through your shock. With a feather he uses as a pen he bids you to sit back, let the bar close, and enjoy your ride. Then he writes down something. You pray as you’ve never prayed before that whatever he wrote down was good. You are not sure.

Unload

Kali – Fudo Myoo

The ride itself consists of the most peaceful eight minutes you’ve had throughout this entire experience.  That ends in a urine-inducing frenzy brought about by a four-limbed monstrosity wielding a scimitar and a necklace of severed human heads. She shouts that you exit to your left and watch your step. You do so, because you know to disobey would be fatal. Kali then spits out a sincere “have a magical day!”  The blood she splatters you with you know you will not clean as easily as the urine.

Fudo Myoo stares at you as you exit. With a sword in one hand and a length of rope he is almost as intimidating a figure as Kali. He tells you to watch your step as well. You would feel offended at this repeated instruction where it not for the fact that deep in your heart you know to show such offense would result in a new head for Kali’s necklace or you might find out what Fudo-Myoo’s accessories are for.

Wheelchair Assist (Optional)

Jesus Christ

If you or any in your party were confined to a wheelchair you would have seen Jesus smiling warmly. He would have asked how far you could walk. Whatever your answer and whatever your malady he would cure it and your wheelchair would be commandeered and recycled for something far more useful.

“Oh you say you can’t walk, oh but I think you can…rise.”

And there you have it, this is the universe’s greatest cast for Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion. No nonsense and no stress, well for the cast at least. However a cast needs other to help coordinate the various tasks needed. And what better leader than the Prince of Egypt himself: Moses. He and Anubis do not get along well personally, but respect the hell out of each other.
And above Moses, running the show if you will, is Ganesha. With luck and wisdom such as his the attraction is in good hands; all four of them.

Moses - Ganesha

Review of the Haunted Mansion Interactive Queue – Part I

New characters greet (and confuse) you as you enter the new interactive queue at WDW's Haunted Mansion
(Originally posted March 27, 2011)

People at theme parks are little better than devolved monkeys. Some so resemble this image that it’s hard to tell if I should direct them to the entrance of my attraction or hand them a banana. First off before delving further into the myopic cesspool of humanity that inhabit theme parks let me say I am speaking in generalities and that I admit there are a great deal of people there simply to enjoy the experience and have a good time lost in the fantasy created by the fantastical buildings and people that work there. They know why they are there and appreciate the great and small. They take time to allow the atmosphere to seep into their reality and replace it with something more fun for the time they visit. However for as many people as fall into this category it is painfully clear they are in the clear minority outnumbered many times over by the remnants of our evolutionary past.

Recently the Haunted Mansion has undergone some major renovations in the outside queue area as well as some additions on the inside. This change has been painful to some, especially the purists who decry this meddling and denounce it as a desecration. In their view they are correct. The house that has stood for hundreds of years, this Dutch Colonial in sunny Florida has welcomed guests for ages—oh wait, the house is only 40 years you say? Well shit. And it only vaguely resembles a true Dutch Colonial? Well double shit. Yeah that’s harsh I know, and these are the people I like!

The reality being replaced by the fantasy is great when everyone buys into it. However Disney World is a business. A cutthroat heartless one scared of bottom line and profit margin shrinkage. Perhaps this was not always so, but it is absolutely true now. That fear drives the company to move with the demands of the people. And THIS is the real tragedy.

Imagine watching a Macbeth performance when suddenly calls for Snooki are shouted from the audience and then, even worse, some of those very audience members shouting run onstage and start touching the sets and poking at the three witches.  Where, do I ask, is something like that even remotely acceptable? Well, at Walt Disney World of course!

That’s the problem I see when viewing the Mansion as what it resembles. It is a fantasy-based reality that is sadly hijacked by the millions ignoring it and walking on through. To them they do not notice the detail of the molding and intricacies of the carved wood. They do not appreciate the way the light from the cobweb filled chandelier hits the wallpaper just so. They do not often see the aging man actually age. They are too busy running through. In part because our management team, feeling pressure from wherever it comes, are compelled to move as many people through an hour as they can.

How then, in this rushed state, can one truly appreciate all there is to appreciate?

The truth is they can’t.  They are forced to run ahead, sit down, ride, cross that attraction off their list and move on. They repeat this all day. Before we feel bad though for the poor guests I must once again point out most of these are the mental equivalent of a cunning chimp (apologies to any chimps reading this).  Disney is slow to change and when they do it is through observed behavior and many hours of intensive research.  This is our society and culture; that is the sad realization I have come in my time working in theme parks. It is actually more accurate to say this is the degraded state of our society and culture. There simply is too much information transferred too fast to too many people very few of whom are equipped or able to process it and therefore properly appreciate it. We have plugged in and tuned out. What the new queue attempts to do is entertain those masses without forcing them to unplug and look up. The irony that I have seen more times than perhaps WDI would like is that very many of those targeted guests are actually annoyed at the queue because it keeps them a few more minutes from the Mansion and therefore delays their feasting on a turkey leg for lunch as they run through another queue. I wonder if these people even know there is a castle in the park?

If the target audience cares little and the purists hate it why then build it in the first place? Good question. The new queue in its design will theoretically alleviate crowd presence in the main walkways of the park. More people in the queue means less people in the street. However that possible boon will be negated if people do as WDI intends and stop and play with the queue elements even possibly creating greater lines and more miserable guests. And if they don’t and choose to bypass the queue or even rush through it, then WDI is defeated as well. This is a no-win scenario, but a necessary one.

You see the real heart of the problem lies in the artificially created queue line and the modern person’s innate rudeness and “me-first” attitude when in a crowd of people. At Disney we are always just a few incidents and 15 minutes away from full mob mentality. Don’t believe me? Be in a queue of a broken down ride for 10 minutes before anyone has been evacuated or compensated for their wait time then tell me where the mentality of the people is? Or their sanity for that matter?

As the lines get longer and the chains forever multiply with an ever increasing number of twists and turns people stop caring about their surroundings. By placing those there Disney has signaled to the guest subconsciously that the goal is the ride and anything that comes between is viewed cursory at best. So like little lab rats we have placed the cheese and then place obstacles in the way. Why do we get angry when they bypass those? If it doesn’t get them closer to that cheese they will lose interest soon.

Like a kid with a new toy at Christmastime this queue will be a hit. But just like that toy it will soon lose its luster. My remedy? Do away with all chains and stanchions and bring back the giant oaks and allow those that want to the ability to use the new playground as that is precisely what the new queue is. Let those that want to run in do so. And don’t rush those that do appreciate art, history, and beauty. A lot of work went into the Mansion and other rides so it’s a damn shame to quickly herd these monkeys right through.
I admit, that’s wishful thinking. Rather than change the trend of myopic vision and goldfish-like memory we contribute to it. Sadly it seems that all the rides and all the queues, unless something drastic changes in society at large, will follow in the Mansion’s footsteps. Next Gen? No thanks!
