Titan of New York

By: Philo Publius

Titan of New York
Prometheus of America
Against the Philosopher you stood,
And the Author you opposed,
With the General in a nascent pantheon
And vision unmatched
Thundering truths to be
Of an infant nation,
Then, in commerce we traded
As principles we debated
Now, in commerce we trade
As principles fade.
No divine genesis
In the pastoral utopia,
Instead, dragon’s teeth
Sown in fertile dreams
Sprung then
To flourish now
Monstrous and beautiful,
When honor was threatened
Oh adopted prophet!
You moved swift as Mercury
With the attendant rage of Ares
To ride against the storms
Gathered to curse and to scorn
With sharpened words
And malleable wills
Down the lists of life and fame
Vainly armored in passing glory
Even as your deeds
In Eternity etched your name
And Time theirs forgot;
Ozymandias each to his cause,
Ignoble as you were faithful,
Not to a woman,
To the dream of a nation.
Titan of New York
Prometheus of these united states.
